Principles G.A.D's credo is to strive for top quality at every stage. From the purchase of raw materials, through grading, design, assembly and finishing, to packaging. To achieve the right quality, the bulk of the range is produced in G.A.D's own workshop on Gotland, Sweden. The production is not primarily focused on the most efficient way to do things, but to ensure the best quality of the end product. The last 20% of the finish normally takes 50% of the production time
Manufacturing process Most pieces are made to order for each customer. A cabinet maker is assigned to take charge of each piece, ensuring top quality. Proper carpentry techniques are used throughout. Thanks to the use of proper techniques and solid materials, the furniture can be sanded down and restored to mint condition even after many years of service. When the timber arrives, it is graded by grain and color. This ensures that the finished piece displays an even grain. The timber is then sawn into lengths for the components to be made. After planing and working, components that fail to make the grade are rejected. Around half the material is lost in production. The components that pass quality control are regraded and labelled, so that parts belonging together eventually end up in the same piece of furniture. Labelling and numbering drawer parts ensures that the grain and pattern of one piece of timber continues across the drawer fronts. As G.A.D’s founder and lead designer, Kristian Eriksson, says: “If you enjoy real furniture, furniture that will last you lifetimes of wear by the eye as well as by the environment, then you will enjoy our furniture”. |
